Reader Survey 2007: The Results

Early this month, I posted a Reader Survey, as a call for help. I've been brainstorming about how I can improve this blog and how I can give more to people who visit and read this blog. Since I like images, I thought I'd create fancy schmancy charts to help share what I found and learned through the survey.

Q1: How often do you visit ShaiCoggins.com?

There was such a varied response to this one. And, I was pleasantly surprised to see that 22% of folks who voted say that they visit at least once a week. And, a further 10% say that they visit every time there's a new a post. And, an additional 10% follow via a feedreader. That's about 42% who seem to follow this blog on a regular basis. Then, there's the 22% who said that it was their first visit to blog and that they were definitely coming back.

Wow. Thanks.

Other voters said: They visit 1 - 2 x a month (12%) and there are those who visit just every few months (10%). Only 5% of the voters claimed to be first time visitors who have no plans of returning.

Q2: Where are you based?

I wish I added more countries to this question. I especially apologise to friends and readers from Canada. It was unintentional!

Anyway, it turned out that 33% of the voters are based in the USA. The other 33% come from the 'Other' category. I already know that Canada's one of those 'Other' countries. I wish I knew what the rest were!

The next bulk of the voter-readers seem to come from Australia, my new home. And, 14% come from the land of my birth, the Philippines. Then, there's a 2% from the UK, another country that's very much part of my life.

Always interesting to know where everyone's based. ๐Ÿ™‚

Q3: How long have you been reading ShaiCoggins.com?

70% of the voters seem to be 'regulars' and 30% are first time visitors. Out of the 70% regular readers, a good 19% have been around for 2 to 3 years. And, 16% have been around for over a year (but less than 2 years). 5% have been around 4 - 6 years and another 5% have been around for over 6 years. Wow indeed.

Relatively 'new' folks: 5% have been around for just 1 - 4 weeks, 11% have been around for 1 to 6 months, and 8% have been around for 7 months to a year.

I was really happy to see that several readers of this blog have been around for a while. I hope you all somehow managed to say hello at one time or another. If not, PLEASE DO. I'd really, really like to know who you are - and say hello back.

And, same goes to those who have been around for the last year (or less). It'll be great if I can get to know you too.

Q4: What will encourage you to visit ShaiCoggins.com more often?

This question interested me a lot. Since this is a personal blog, it really started out mostly as a place to post stuff about my life - travels, interests, family news, friendships... But, somehow, things have evolved over the years. While I still post personal stuff, I have avoided being TOO personal (several reasons for this that I won't go into at the moment).

Anyway, it looks like based on this survey, there are two things that folks want to see the most from this blog: Creative Content (24%) and Useful Content, like HowTos and Reviews (24%). While I'm aware of what type of Creative Content I can post, I'm not too sure about what kind of Useful Content that folks would like to read here. I guess I'd have to continue figuring that as I move forward.

Other things that interest folks: Personal Content (14%), Tech Content (14%), and Other (14%). Again, I wonder what the 'Other' is all about?

An interesting point that was made in this question though is that 19% of folks said that they'll be encouraged to visit more often if I simply post/update more often.

And, that brings me to the fifth and final question -

survey-5.jpg

Q5: As a reader of this blog, what is the ideal posting frequency for you?
Majority of the voters (47%) seem to think that the most ideal posting frequency is 2 to 3 times a week. And, another 29% said that it'll be good if I can post once a day (maybe 5 to 7 posts a week).

I guess, this basically just reiterates the message: Posting more is A Good Thing. Especially since 76% of those who voted basically said so. ๐Ÿ™‚

That's why, with this in mind, I know that I will try to achieve at least the 2 - 3x a week posting level.

I guess, the 16% who said once a week and the 3% who said once a month will just need to cope with a bit more content. ๐Ÿ˜‰ Oh, and there was also a further 5% who voted for 'Other'. Again, not so sure what exactly that means.

Additional noteworthy comments from the survey include -

From NotSquare:

I read your blog for 2 reasons:

1. to keep me posted on your personal life (not that i am snooping, i just regard you as a friend and have gotten to know you, your 2 boys and your new princess )

2. to update me on the blog community. you have so much useful information on your blog! i love reading it all!

From Kari:

"I feel that this (what I consider to be personal) blog, does also inspire and teach at the same time. I like that when I visit I never know quite what to expect. Iรขโ‚ฌโ„ขve been a reader for quite some time (Reclusivegirl, Love Tinsley, etc.) and am rarely disappointed upon my arrival. We all like to learn about the blogger, and if it happens to be educational as well, even better ๐Ÿ˜‰

There's about 40 respondents who answered this question. And, I just want to say thank you so much to everyone who participated. I really appreciate constructive feedback.

While I cannot make any promises as to what I will (and will not) do, I know that I definitely intend to keep improving this blog to make it better. With your help, I know it's possible.

Again, many thanks.
