Exploring Coworking in Adelaide

Early this month, I mentioned that I was exploring the idea of coworking. Today, I finally signed the contract that says I am now a founding member of the brand new coworking community over at Our World Today. And, I can't be more excited.

Contract, new office key, and even Foursquare mayorship in hand, today was my official first day at my new part-time office for Vervely. And, the plan is to work in our CBD office 2x/week at the moment.

I'll be sharing the office with the great crew at OWT, and hopefully, we will be welcoming new coworking community members soon.

Why coworking?

For those who are not familiar with the coworking concept, this explanation of coworking from Wikipedia is a good one to refer to:

Coworking is a style of work that involves a shared working environment, often an office, and independent activity. Unlike in a typical office environment, those coworking are usually not employed by the same organization.Typically it is attractive to work-at-home professionals, independent contractors, or people who travel frequently who end up working in relative isolation. Coworking is also the social gathering of a group of people who are still working independently, but who share values, and who are interested in the synergy that can happen from working with like-minded talented people in the same space.

It gives an insight as to why I opted to give coworking a try. I really like the idea of being part of a working community. To stay plugged in, with a group of people that I like, working in areas that I would like to be very much a part of.

Coworking in Adelaide

The coworking community in Adelaide is still very much in its infancy. There had been attempts at building this community over the last few years. I've heard of coworking spaces in Adelaide in planning stages, launching stages, and part-working stages. Including the coworking space that started and ended over at Bridge8* (plus a few others mentioned in Kristin Alford's blog post).

But, we're still in the process of seeing things grow.

Early this year, Majoran Distillery has started a coworking community that focuses on technology start- ups. They have been recently featured at Adelaide Now. And, they seem to be doing really well.

A group of people I know are also looking in to setting up CoLab Adelaide, and I am keen to see them succeed. I hope that they do get the project off the ground.

Last month, I was approached by OWT co-founder Chris Campbell about taking part in launching a coworking space at Our World Today. In case you're not familiar with OWT, it is a nonprofit media organisation that wishes to make a difference in the world by sharing positive news. They're looking at making an impact by supporting communities.

So yeah. Media. Nonprofit. Content. Community. Changemaking. Global impact. Needless to say, they stand for the very things that I wish to support. That's why I thought that it was the perfect coworking fit for me and Vervely.

Of course, it's still early days and I'm going with short term contracts to check if I can see how well I can operate my business in a coworking situation. But, I really am hoping that the coworking community in Adelaide will continue to grow. And, I'm thrilled to be a part of it in some way.

Virtual tour of our coworking space

As you look at the photo collage, you will find the main work area of the OWT office (top left pic). Then, there's the wall of inspiration next to the workstations (top right pic). On the bottom left, you can see the cozy workspace, where people can lie on cushy seats while working (and listening to music). And, there's the verandah, with faux grass (good for mini golf), some chairs and tables, and a barbecue (bottom right pic).

What you can't see here are: conference table (also used for table tennis, I was told!), bar/kitchen area, computers area, editing workspace, toilets, and the meeting room.

We're currently being invited to write some inspirational words in the brand new meeting room. Yes, as in, literally write. Will be thinking about it and considering what to write. ๐Ÿ™‚
