Today's the annual Christmas Pageant here in Adelaide. So, my family had an early start, as we decided to take the train in to the City to watch the parade.
Hubby and I have been here for about 6 Christmases now. And, this was our fourth time to see the pageant. It was my boy's 3rd time to watch and my li'l girl's 2nd time. It's interesting to see the different reactions each year. 🙂
Anyway, even though it was a bit chilly and rainy, the kids still had a ball. And, that's always a joy to see. Plus, the whole thing didn't feel too overwhelming. Still, we were exhausted by the end of it.
I did manage to take some pics, as you can see the collage here. But, I decided not to upload everything on Flickr. At least, not yet.
The thing about being the unofficial 'family photographer' is that I end up having NO pics during these events. Every time we end up looking at these things, I'm hardly ever in front of the camera, if at all.
Well, I guess that's why having self portraits help. And, writing of which, here are two self portraits that I took today during a quick session.
One's a solo pic of me in black and white. And one's of me and my girl. I really enjoyed the one that I did with us together. I took a few fun pics of us that turned out better than I expected. Hope you like them too...
Have a great weekend, everyone!Read More
I'm running late for my first NaBloPoMo '08 post. I ended up staying later than expected at a dinner party. It was a lovely evening, though. Met great new folks and developed friendships. And, the kids had a ball! So, it's all good. Yep, even if I was nursing a cold through it.
Anyway, I've been thinking about NaBloPoMo and NaNoWriMo a lot over the last 48 hours.
On NaBloPoMo, I've developed a rough guideline on how to help me along with my daily blog posts. And, one of the things I decided to do is to explore self portraiture once again. But this time, just once a week. I'll post a new self-portrait every Saturday, which I may have taken at any time during the week (at least, for the month of November).
This photo is something I took when I got home from the dinner party. I decided to play with light and shade. Just used available lighting from a room, took a shot, used the built-in monochrome edit from my camera, then uploaded the file. Yep - no other editing/cropping done here.
On NaNoWriMo - Yes, I'm pleased to say that I managed to do some writing today while I was waiting at the sidelines during my kids' swimming lessons. Heh. Not a lot of word count, though. But, writing is still writing, right?
In any case, happy 1st of November to you all. And, hope you're having a great weekend.Read More
It has been a while since I last took and shared a self portrait. Even though I received some really great feedback regarding my self portrait photography a few months ago, it hasn't felt right to start it all up again since I left the 365 Days project (around the time my dad passed away). And, some folks have been asking if I'll ever try it again.
Well, when I received my pink b5media shirt a couple of months ago, a few people requested for a photo. So, even though I wasn't really up for a self-portrait session just yet, I took a couple of shots last June. But then, I kept postponing the sharing bit. Not sure why. I guess, it just felt weird.
But, life can sometimes be about overcoming one weirdness after another. So, here I am, sharing another self portrait. Never mind that it's actually one that I took almost 2 months ago.
Does this mean I'm getting ready to start self portraiture once again? I'm not sure yet. Definitely not ready to start 365 once again. I don't know if I ever will.
But, I do miss taking photos. I mean, not just the snapshot stuff that I've been doing since letting go of the 365 projects that I started early this year. You see, lately, all the camera action that my D40x has seen are art/craft projects and family snapshots. They're good to have, of course. But, I don't even take many of those photos either. So, yeah, my beloved camera is feeling a neglected.
And, well... Somehow, I just want to get back to documenting life once again through photography. No full blown projects. Just the simple stuff. And maybe - just maybe - a self portrait or two again.
P.S. - Yes, I *love* my pink b5 shirt. So pleased that we've got girly schwag shirts. Really love the designs of the last batch of shirts.Read More
When I received the instructions: "Make sure to buy something frivolous!" - after I received a Christmas cash pressie over 3 months ago, I didn't quite know what to purchase. My first instinct was to buy art/craft materials - or a new accessory for my camera. But apparently, those things aren't frivolous enough.
Frivolous items, I was told by a few folks, are things that you normally wouldn't buy for yourself. Something like a fur hat or a feather boa.
Ah, yes. Those. Definitely NOT stuff I'd buy for myself.
So, how do you actually buy something frivolous? If you won't normally buy it, how do you go looking for it?
Just the name alone captured my fancy, seeing as I associate the term lorikeet to Aussie birds that I fell in love with when I first visited this beautiful country. And, who doesn't like the idea of wearing anything close to a kimono? That mixture of Western + Eastern imagery captured my mind and my heart.
But, I've never bought a shrug. Let alone, a custom-made one. So, I simply marked the item as a 'fave' on Etsy, and moved on.
With my Christmas money + the frivolous shopping instruction, I found myself going back to that Lorikeet Kimono Shrug listing. And, before I could stop myself from giving in to frivolity, I clicked on the 'Buy' button. Yes, even if it was the middle of summer here Down Under at the time!
Three months after I placed that order, the shrug arrived at my doorstep. And, of course, I couldn't resist a photo op for my 365 project -
And, the back view -
What luxury it is to own and wear something that you know was made for you by someone. The shrug is soft, very colourful, warm... beautiful. It came with a strong scent of something I couldn't name - but will forever associate with this item.
Although I had to wait 3 months for it to arrive, I didn't mind so much, seeing as we were having heat waves here just a couple of weeks ago. A shrug wasn't actually one that I'd want to wear for that type of weather. And now, it came just in time for the cooler weather. Perfect for Autumn!
How about you? Have you bought anything frivolous lately? If you were given a few hundred dollars to spend on something totally frivolous - what will you buy and why?Read More
